Today I was in the downtown area most of the day for meetings. I finished up my meetings around 4:30 pm and decided to have dinner while I was already out. Truthfully, I eat out often. My refrigerator is definitely that of a single person, more so a single male with only condiments, water, and coffee creamer. Anyway, I frequent restaurants often for dinner and the restaurant of choice for today was Flat Top Grill.
By the time I got there, the after-work crowd had already started to fill the place. There was only one chair left at their bar and a nice gentleman (named Elias) moves his chair over to make room for me. As I began to order a glass of Lambrusco, he interrupted and asked if I wanted to share a bottle. I was like okay and could tell this was about to get interesting. We drank our wine while exchanging pleasantries, talked about our day and around the second glass he asked me to join him for dinner.
The dinner conversation was nice and we talked about work, kids and shared a little personal info about our lives and childhood. He made me laugh till I cried and I did the same for him. He thanked me for dinner paid the tab and I wished him well on his journey back to the U.K. As we left he walked me to my Lyft, gave me a hug and said thanks for a great time at dinner stranger. I laughed, smiled and said the same.
Chicago is a place where anything can happen at any time. I am sure this will not be my last experience having dinner with a stranger. I would like to say thank you, Elias, for treating me to a wonderful time.
